RETHINKING THE CANVAS
Lucia Dohrmann’s abstract paintings emphasise materiality and process. They reveal something hiding in plain sight - the nature and structure of artists’ canvas. Although always having been interested in painting, it was her early childhood associations with textile practices that have led her to rethink how painters’ canvases can be used to produce a work of art.
In Rethinking the Canvas, Lucia’s paintings explore and extend the possibilities of traditional painting materials. Repetitious handmade textile processes give a softness and warmth, creating tactile surfaces that mark the passing of laboured time. The works speak of the connections between pattern and repetition, textile techniques, and mathematical thinking. They occupy a space somewhere between painting and textiles. Lucia likes to describe them as paintings in the expanded field.
