Thomas Folber
Glitch is a selection of artworks created through the process of using forced errors as a critical approach to understanding digital pictures. Visual artist Thomas Folber is interested in exploring the inner workings of digital pictures. By breaking an image open and creating a glitch, he is able to peer inside to better understand how these structures work.
Beginning as digital photographs and paintings, each picture in Glitch was pushed towards visual failure through a deliberate subversive use of the digital file. Through this approach, it is Tom's presence that emerges as a glitch in the digital system, an unexpected provocation within the machine that results in a partial visual collapse. This act of glitch permits an alternative understanding of the digital image by breaking its representational veneer, to reveal the visual noise of its encoded materiality.
