QUERENCIA | Sue Michael & Talia Wignall
LOCAL AND PARTICULAR | Michal Kluvanek
CHRISTMAS IN THE BACK ROOM | A group exhibition
4 November - 12 December 2021
QUERENCIA
Querencia, a Spanish word, describes “a place where we feel safe, a ‘home’ from where we draw our strength and inspiration. In bullfighting, a bull may stake out a querencia in a part of the ring where he will gather his energies before another charge.”
Sue Michael has been on an investigative journey concerning safe havens for some years; her work and the variety of these presentations reflect her long slow thinking. She has extended her eye to wider landscapes and brought their calm sanctity back into the home with designs for fabrics, domestic dioramas and adornments that overlap with her favoured landscapes.
For Talia Wignall, voices of the past are echoed in belongings within a house that will never be lived in the same way again. Unassuming items and objects within this place carry memories of what once was. They carry fingerprints and they carry us. Those who left us long ago still exist in something…
LOCAL AND PARTICULAR
Michal Kluvanek's exhibition lovingly shows the people and places that are important to him in his suburb of Thebarton.
I have always said that the work of a photographer is with the local and particular. I have photographed my neighbours and my neighbourhood with close attention and I'll say affection, ever since I moved here more than thirty years ago.
I am honoured to have an exhibition space on West Thebarton Rd, which is well known as a shopping cart graveyard - one of my obsessions.
Throughout the exhibition, Michal will be in the gallery each Thursday and Sunday, keen to chat about his work.
